Solar Panel Flash Tests and EL Reports: Serial Traceability for RFQs

Compare solar panel flash tests and EL reports using serial links, measurement conditions and review criteria. Build a traceable evidence package for RFQs.

A solar panel flash-test spreadsheet and an electroluminescence image answer different questions. For a useful purchasing decision, both must identify the actual module, the measurement event and the criteria used to review it. “Flash and EL passed” is incomplete when the supporting files cannot be matched to the shipment.

This guide concerns crystalline-silicon PV module records. It focuses on evidence review, rather than instructions for carrying out electrical measurements. The STC and NMOT datasheet guide explains reference ratings; here the question is what was measured on an identified unit.

Ask two questions of the evidence package

An I–V curve records current and voltage under stated conditions; a flash test uses pulsed illumination. An EL image records emission from electrically excited cells. It provides spatial inspection information, rather than a direct power measurement.

Begin the review by asking whether the electrical record meets the agreed performance requirement and whether the image review meets the agreed inspection requirement. A favorable result in one record does not close an unresolved finding in the other. Record both decisions against the same unit identifier.

Read the complete flash-test record

Request the module model and serial, test date, record identifier, I–V curve or agreed data export, and the reported electrical quantities with units. These may include maximum power, open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, and voltage and current at maximum power. Identify which values are measured or derived and which have been corrected to reference conditions.

Fraunhofer ISE's published sample calibration certificate includes serial identification, measurement conditions, an I–V curve, electrical results with uncertainty, and measuring-equipment traceability. It separates ambient conditions from module measurement conditions. The document is explicitly a sample, dated February 16, 2023; its values are not specifications for another panel. For your RFQ, ask the reporting laboratory or supplier to identify the applicable method, relevant conditioning and corrections, equipment record and measurement uncertainty. Have the responsible reviewer agree how uncertainty will be handled at an acceptance limit. Do not decide that a borderline result passes merely because the displayed number has been rounded upward.

A production flash record and an independent calibration certificate can have different purposes and scopes. State which document you require and why. A supplier should not have to guess whether the order calls for routine production data, selected independent measurements, or both.

Make EL images reviewable and comparable

Require a full-module image, an unambiguous orientation and the original available image file, with annotations supplied separately or traceably linked. Agree the image quality needed for the intended review. A small screenshot pasted into a report can leave a finding impossible to examine or locate consistently.

The IEA PVPS report covers bias current, temperature, focus, exposure and processing. It cautions against identifying a specific physical phenomenon from one current/temperature combination alone. IEA PVPS report, sections 3.1.1 and 3.1.3.

Ask the provider to name the acquisition procedure and record the relevant settings and processing steps. For a comparison, have the reviewer confirm that the two records provide comparable visibility of the feature in question. A change in appearance should trigger a review of both the module and the evidence, rather than an immediate conclusion about physical deterioration.

Agree the inspection categories, acceptance criteria, reviewer and process for uncertain findings before ordering. An annotated line is an observation requiring interpretation. Do not convert its length, count or darkness into an invented power-loss percentage, future failure date or universal rejection threshold.

Sandia National Laboratories' PV-IV-EL dataset is a useful example of linked evidence. Its official catalogue describes corresponding I–V flash data and EL images, with metadata for the modules and acquisition parameters. Build a shipment review index with the module serial as the primary unit reference. Link the flash record ID, EL file ID, test event, report revision and disposition. Preserve manufacturer identifiers exactly, including leading zeros. Keep a separate event identifier when the same module is measured more than once; its earlier and later records must remain distinguishable.

Check the index for missing serials, duplicate entries, repeated image references and files that do not open. Resolve an identity mismatch before interpreting the result. A correctly named folder cannot prove that the record inside belongs to the named panel.

Keep this measurement index connected to the solar panel packaging and handover record. The pallet record locates the shipped units; the measurement index identifies what evidence exists for each unit and event.

Separate changed condition from its cause

If transport condition matters, agree the recording checkpoints in advance. Identify whether the earlier event occurred before packing, after packing, at dispatch or elsewhere, and whether the later event occurred on arrival or after further handling. Preserve the intervening handover and exception records.

As an evidence rule, a later observation alone does not establish when a feature originated. Even a matched pair only brackets an observed change between two events, subject to comparable measurement quality. Determining the cause requires the handling history and a competent technical assessment. Do not automatically attribute every new-looking mark to freight transport, or dismiss it because a flash value meets the agreed limit.

Document who can place affected units on hold, request clarification and authorize further evaluation. Keep the original records when a corrected report or additional image arrives, with the revision history showing what changed and why.

Compare a fictional supplier submission

Matching file counts is therefore only a preliminary check. Price comparisons should use the same serial coverage, deliverables, review stages and treatment of exceptions. Ask bidders to identify any separate charge for original data, additional imaging, independent review or repeat measurements, and the approvals on which their delivery proposal depends.

Can an EL image replace a flash-test report?

No. Request the electrical measurement record and the image assessment needed for your specification. An image without a validated quantitative method does not establish the module's measured power.

Does a passing flash value prove that the module has no cracks?

No. A power acceptance decision covers the stated electrical requirement. Evaluate the agreed imaging requirement separately and retain unresolved observations for technical review.

Can an arrival EL image prove shipping damage?

It records the inspected condition at that event. Establishing an intervening change requires matched earlier evidence and comparable visibility; attributing a cause also requires the handling history and technical assessment.

Must every module have both records?

Define the required coverage in the purchase specification. If sampling is agreed, identify how units are selected, which serials are covered and how findings affect the remaining lot. Do not imply full coverage from a sample report.
