Solar Panel STC vs NMOT: Comparing Datasheets and Output Claims in an RFQ

Compare solar panel STC and NMOT ratings, cell versus ambient temperature, and output claims. Request matched datasheets and scoped performance evidence.

Compare solar panels using the same reference conditions and the same output boundary. An STC power rating, a power value listed under NMOT conditions and energy delivered to a battery describe different things. A lower number in the NMOT column does not, by itself, show a defective or overrated panel.

This guide helps buyers turn those labels into a comparable evidence package. It applies to reviewing module claims; a complete portable kit or installed system also needs its own controller, cable, mounting and energy assessment.

Read the conditions before comparing watts

STC means standard test conditions. The Canadian Solar HiKu CS3W-MS datasheet defines its STC values at 1,000 W/m² irradiance, AM1.5 spectrum and 25°C cell temperature. Its NMOT electrical table uses 800 W/m² irradiance, AM1.5 spectrum, 20°C ambient temperature and 1 m/s wind. The temperatures refer to different physical quantities. That May 2020 document is a named reference example, checked again for this guide. It is not a claim about current availability or the specifications of any SINAWATTS product. Ask for the exact offered module's current controlled document rather than copying values from the example.

Separate reference ratings from system-output claims

NMOT means nominal module operating temperature. It is a temperature characteristic; the separate electrical table reports power and other electrical values under its stated conditions. When a quotation says “NMOT rating,” ask whether it refers to the temperature in degrees Celsius or the associated power in watts.

In a quotation spreadsheet, give the reference condition its own column next to every power value. Give an energy estimate a separate section with its period, location and system assumptions.

Do not treat a temperature value in °C as a second wattage rating. Likewise, do not compare watts at the panel terminals with watt-hours received by a battery.

A real datasheet can contain two valid power figures

In the cited CS3W-MS document, the 450MS column lists 450 W at STC and 336 W in the NMOT electrical table. These are two entries for the same named power class under the document's different conditions. Their ratio, approximately 74.7%, is simple arithmetic from that example; it is not a universal field-output factor or an efficiency rating.

For your RFQ, carry the entire model designation, document revision and condition footnote with the selected column. When a bidder supplies only a cropped image, ask for the complete document before marking the comparison as resolved. A photograph that loses the column heading can make a legitimate value look contradictory.

Keep cell temperature separate from weather temperature

The SAM module-model documentation distinguishes reference ratings from output calculated under operating conditions. It also explains that mounting arrangements affect airflow and heat transfer around a module. Consequently, specifying only the outdoor air temperature leaves the module operating condition incomplete. SAM module performance and temperature-model documentation.

Ask bidders to identify how temperature was established in any performance estimate: measured cell-related data, a documented thermal model or an explicitly stated assumption. Do not relabel ambient temperature as cell temperature to make a calculation possible.

For a flush-mounted panel, a portable panel on a stand and an open-rack module, record the actual configuration independently. Have the designer determine whether the chosen model and evidence apply. A rating example for a rigid module does not prove identical behavior for a flexible or foldable construction.

Compare supplier replies without inventing a conversion

Consider a hypothetical procurement exercise. The RFQ requires bidders to quote a named module with its STC rating, an NMOT electrical table if available, and a separate estimate of energy delivered by the proposed kit.

Supplier A sends a complete module datasheet but no controller information. Supplier B sends a daily watt-hour estimate with a bill of materials but omits the weather location, orientation and loss assumptions. Supplier C supplies the requested module document and a traceable model with all stated kit assumptions.

A has provided a usable module-rating record, but its kit-output claim remains unresolved. B's energy figure is not comparable until the model basis is supplied. C can proceed to technical review of the stated evidence; completeness is not proof that every input is correct or the prediction is guaranteed.

Record two separate decisions for each reply: module rating documented or unresolved, and kit-energy estimate accepted for the stated assumptions or unresolved. This lets purchasing compare the supported module offer while tracking the additional kit information still needed.

Do not fill the gaps by multiplying STC watts by a fixed percentage or by an assumed number of sunlight hours. Instead, return a short question list to each bidder and keep the module-rating decision separate from the energy-model decision. That avoids rejecting a valid panel because an incomplete kit claim was attached to it.

Ask for an energy model with a clear boundary

SAM calculates module DC output using module parameters and incident radiation derived from weather information. Array configuration, shading, losses and the inverter then affect the system calculation. In a model submission, require the file or report revision, exact module and controller/inverter, location and weather-data period, orientation, mounting, shading assumptions and included losses. Specify whether the result represents module DC energy, controller output, battery input or usable load energy. For storage systems, request the additional storage and operating assumptions that apply.

Record exclusions beside the prediction. If clipping, cable losses or storage behavior is outside the submitted model, it should remain visible in the comparison rather than disappearing inside an unexplained “real-world output” label. A modeled number is an estimate with assumptions, not a supplier's measured project result.

Define acceptance evidence and quotation scope

Decide before ordering what will be checked at document review, sample evaluation and shipment. Link the chosen rating, model suffix, bill of materials and document revision. Where module performance measurements are required, ask for the method, calibration traceability, measurement uncertainty and agreed acceptance rule.

Keep a declared production tolerance distinct from measurement uncertainty. Ask the responsible technical reviewer to define how both are handled in an acceptance decision; do not treat either as a general allowance to disregard a discrepancy. No universal field test limit is established by this guide.

Request module-only and kit prices separately when both are relevant. Identify which controller, cables, connectors, stand or mounting parts are included, and ask for sample quantities, production quantities and document availability. Have the supplier state any additional cost or timing for requested evidence instead of assuming testing is included.

Is NMOT power the guaranteed output I will receive outdoors?

No. It is tied to stated reference conditions. Outdoor output depends on the actual module and system conditions, while delivered energy also depends on the period and downstream equipment. Request the exact measurement or modeling boundary.

Can two panels with the same STC wattage produce different daily energy?

Yes. The STC value is one reference point. Compare applicable performance data and a consistent system model with the same weather, orientation and loss assumptions. A shared nameplate value alone does not establish equal energy yield.

Does a lower NMOT power figure mean a panel failed its STC rating?

No. Compare like conditions first. If a discrepancy remains, request the full datasheet and agreed performance-test evidence for the exact module. A value observed under different conditions cannot establish an STC acceptance result by itself.

What should I send when requesting a portable solar-kit quotation?

Identify the intended battery or load, desired use pattern, panel format, installation and required accessories. Ask for a complete kit bill of materials, module-rating documents and a separately scoped output assessment, with sample and production prices and timing confirmed in the quote.
