A branch fault should interrupt the intended circuit without unnecessarily disconnecting healthy branches. Buying a larger upstream fuse does not establish that result. Buyers need evidence connecting both fuse models to the actual DC circuit.
This guide explains which documents to request and how to review their boundaries. It provides verification inputs; the responsible electrical engineer must determine application ratings and approve the protection study.
Separate the fuse from its holder
The fuse interrupts overcurrent. The holder provides its mounting and electrical interfaces; physical fit does not establish the combination's protection performance.
UL Solutions identifies separate U.S. evaluation standards for fuses and fuseholders: UL 248 and UL 4248 respectively. Evidence for one component therefore cannot stand in for the other. Request documentation identifying the exact models, ratings and applicable conditions. UL fuse and fuseholder services.
Use the DC fuse holder selection guide for mounting and interface questions. Use the holder thermal derating guide for assembly temperature evidence.
Read what the time-current curve actually represents
A time-current curve, or TCC, relates current magnitude to operating time. First identify whether the document shows average melting behavior, a minimum melting boundary, or maximum clearing performance. These are different evidence types.
Littelfuse explains that its general TCCs represent average behavior and that equally rated fuses can have substantially different curves. An average line is consequently unsuitable as a guaranteed worst-case boundary without additional manufacturer data. Littelfuse Fuseology Design Guide.
Ask for:
- The exact series, current rating, document revision and curve legend.
- Test temperature, initial loading and applicable AC or DC conditions.
- Guaranteed operating limits or tolerance information.
- The interpretation of very short operating times and any virtual-time axis.
- Pulse endurance evidence covering repeated starts, charging events and cooling intervals.
For procurement review, an unlabeled curve image is incomplete evidence.
Distinguish melting I²t from total clearing I²t
I²t expresses the integral of squared current over time, with units of ampere-squared seconds. Melting I²t covers the period before the element melts. Arcing adds another contribution before current interruption is complete; total clearing I²t includes both stages. Eaton fuse technology.
Although often called "let-through energy," I²t is not itself measured in joules. Resistive heating also depends on resistance. It cannot, alone, quantify battery energy, arc-flash exposure or every component's damage risk.
For a calculation review, request the current waveform, integration interval, measurement bandwidth and whether the reported value is nominal or a guaranteed limit. Do not substitute prospective fault current squared times an assumed duration for measured let-through behavior during current limitation.
Also request peak let-through current and the protected component's applicable withstand evidence. A thermal comparison does not establish every mechanical or dielectric limit.
Keep the DC fault conditions attached to the data
DC circuit inductance and resistance influence how fault current rises. Eaton's high-speed fuse guide explains that circuit time constant affects fuse behavior and that DC arc interruption differs from AC operation. It also identifies battery conditions as important selection inputs. Eaton high-speed fuse application guide, sections H–I.
The RFQ should therefore identify maximum circuit voltage, prospective fault-current range and the fault-path time constant or validated waveform. Include battery operating states, cable paths, parallel sources and capacitor contributions where relevant.
Verify both severe faults and lower-current fault conditions. A high interrupting rating does not establish adequate clearing throughout every operating region. Do not transfer an AC selectivity table or a generic AC-to-DC conversion to the proposed DC assembly.
Verify upstream and downstream selectivity
Selective coordination aims to clear the affected branch while preserving the upstream protective device.
For the series-fuse arrangement described in Littelfuse's automotive Fuseology, the relevant comparison places the downstream fuse's total clearing I²t below the upstream fuse's minimum melting I²t. This explains why comparing two nominal melting values is insufficient. Littelfuse Fuseology, selective coordination.
Use that principle within the manufacturer's applicable current region and conditions. A defensible review needs worst-case limits, tolerances, preloading and DC applicability. At longer operating times, review the time-current boundaries rather than assuming a short-duration I²t comparison covers sustained overloads.
Require the study to state whether selectivity covers the entire specified fault range or only a limited range. A fuse-to-breaker arrangement requires its own evidence; see the DC breaker buyer guide.
Build an RFQ evidence package
Keep design inputs separate from supplier declarations so missing evidence remains visible.
| RFQ item | Buyer provides | Supplier response requested |
|---|---|---|
| Protection arrangement | One-line diagram, fault locations and continuity requirement | Exact upstream and downstream part numbers |
| DC conditions | Voltage range, source states and fault-study assumptions | Applicable DC ratings and test conditions |
| Operating duty | Continuous load, inrush waveform and repetition | Curves, tolerance information and pulse guidance |
| Coordination | Required fault range and protected equipment | Supported device pairing, study or test report, and limits |
| Assembly | Holder, conductors, enclosure and installation conditions | Compatibility documents and assembly restrictions |
| Purchasing control | Quantity, destination market and approval milestones | Itemized quotation, evidence availability and change notification |
Before sample approval:
- Reconcile every proposed part number with its supporting documents.
- Obtain the engineer's review of protection and coordination evidence.
- Agree on representative assembly checks and acceptance criteria.
- Record unresolved deviations with an owner and due date.
- Freeze the approved bill of materials and document revisions.
Treat an alternative fuse as a new review item even when its dimensions and current marking match.
Buyer FAQ
Does matching fuse amperage establish interchangeability?
No. Compare operating characteristics, DC interruption evidence, physical interfaces and the approved coordination arrangement. Record alternatives explicitly in the approved bill of materials.
Is a larger upstream fuse enough to ensure selectivity?
No. The size difference does not establish the required operating sequence. Obtain evidence for the actual pairing, fault range and DC conditions.
Can an AC coordination chart support our DC approval?
Only when the manufacturer explicitly establishes applicability to the proposed DC conditions. Otherwise request a DC study or suitable test evidence; do not assume transferability.
What should we request about price, MOQ and lead time?
Request a quotation against the documented configuration and quantity. Ask whether samples, supporting documents and any required external evaluation are included, and obtain written commercial terms.
