Common battery terminal types
Top-post clamps fit tapered automotive battery posts and may use a bolt, lever or quick-release mechanism. Stud terminals and distribution posts provide threaded connection points for ring lugs and multiple circuits. Marine-style terminals often combine a battery-post clamp with one or more studs. Bus-style distribution terminals route several branch circuits but require careful current and protection planning.
Copper and tinned copper
Copper offers high electrical conductivity and is commonly used where low resistance and high current matter. Bare copper can oxidize, so tinned copper is often considered when corrosion resistance or easier soldering is important. Buyers should specify whether the part must be solid copper, copper alloy or merely copper plated; these descriptions are not interchangeable.
Brass
Brass combines useful conductivity with mechanical strength and machinability. It is common in clamps, posts and hardware where threads and repeated tightening matter. Alloy composition and surface treatment affect performance, so the RFQ should state the material requirement rather than accepting “gold color” as proof of brass.
Zinc alloy and plated steel parts
Zinc alloy can be economical and allows complex shapes, but it is not a substitute for copper when the current path requires higher conductivity. Some assemblies also include steel bolts, nuts or plates for mechanical fastening. Ask which component carries current and which component only provides clamping force.

Match the terminal to the environment
Automotive, RV, marine and stationary storage installations expose terminals to different levels of vibration, moisture, salt and temperature. In a marine or outdoor application, the complete assembly matters: base material, plating, fasteners, boots and sealing around the cable connection. A corrosion-resistant terminal can still fail early if incompatible hardware or an exposed crimp is used.
Dimensions that belong in the RFQ
- Battery post type and positive or negative dimensions.
- Cable size or conductor cross-section.
- Stud thread and hole size, such as M6, M8 or M10 where applicable.
- Number and orientation of cable exits or distribution points.
- Maximum available installation envelope.
- Required cover, boot, insulation or color identification.
Quality checks before bulk approval
Compare the sample with the drawing and mating battery post. Verify material using the agreed method, check dimensions and threads, inspect plating coverage and sharp edges, and confirm that the cable or lug seats correctly. For critical-current applications, define the electrical and temperature tests with the responsible system engineer.
