A battery cable quotation that says “copper” or “marine cable” leaves important questions unanswered. Buyers still need to know the conductor substrate, any strand coating, the electrical requirement and the conditions supporting the completed connection.
Start with four separate fields: base conductor material, strand finish, cable construction and termination configuration. This makes a bare-versus-tinned comparison useful without treating a surface finish as proof of the whole assembly's suitability.

State what is copper and what is coated
Bare copper and tinned copper both describe a copper conductor, but the latter has a tin coating. A statement about a tinned lug, braid or terminal does not establish that the cable's current-carrying strands have the same finish.
LAPP's listing for Copper Rope Tinned Class 5, article 4571212, explicitly describes a copper conductor with an additional tin coating. The listed product is intended for equipotential bonding and is identified as a trade product. It illustrates how the substrate and finish can be declared; it is not evidence that this item is a suitable insulated battery lead. LAPP product construction and application.
Ask for the construction description of the exact offered part number. If a photo shows a silver-colored surface, require a written material identification rather than drawing a conclusion from color. If “copper” refers only to an outer layer or to one part of a composite construction, that distinction must be disclosed and reviewed.
For multi-component cables, identify which material description belongs to which layer. Alpha Wire's 1751 product specification separately describes tinned copper conductors and a bare copper braid shield. Connect the finish to the actual environment
Tin coating can be relevant to corrosion exposure, but it does not answer every environmental question. Request the cable and connection evidence for the planned location: protected interior, condensation-prone enclosure, exposed routing or other specified conditions.
Victron's Wiring Unlimited DC-wiring chapter recommends tin-coated copper strands for marine or moist situations in its cable-selection guidance. It also directs readers to the relevant equipment manual for cable requirements. The LAPP listing above identifies corrosion resistance in damp and salty environments among the benefits of its named tinned conductor. It does not quantify the service life of another cable, approve every chemical exposure or establish an ingress rating for a terminated assembly.
Ask which exposure the offered evidence covers, which component was evaluated and what acceptance criterion was applied. An isolated material description cannot establish the performance of insulation, seals and terminations together.

Specify electrical evidence independently of appearance
Do not rank two offers by conductor color, outside cable diameter or coating alone. Request the declared size/construction and the resistance requirement applicable to the exact offered cable.
A resistance value needs a unit, length basis, reference temperature and status: nominal, maximum specified, or measured result. These labels are not interchangeable.
Alpha Wire's named 1751 specification, for example, labels its conductor DC resistance as nominal and states a temperature and length basis. That illustrates the importance of reading the qualifiers. Do not turn a nominal catalog value into a lot acceptance limit, or transfer that communication cable's value to a battery lead.
If the buyer requires finished-assembly resistance, distinguish it from the cable-only requirement. The assembly result depends on the defined measurement boundaries and includes the connections within those boundaries. Where suppliers present different units, request a normalized comparison with the original values retained. A unit conversion can make numbers comparable, but it cannot supply a missing temperature condition or change a nominal value into a guaranteed maximum.

Request a source document or report reference against every relevant row. A general certificate or polished brochure may be useful background, but it should not erase an unresolved material or lot-identity question.
Compare three hypothetical offers
Assume a fictional RFQ requires tinned copper current-carrying strands, a declared cable construction, an accepted cable-only resistance limit at the stated reference conditions, and lot-linked acceptance evidence for that limit. The actual electrical limit, required inspection scope and termination requirements would be set by the project's design authority.
Offer A says “marine battery cable” and supplies a silver-colored conductor photo. It does not identify the substrate or the strand coating. This is an evidence gap, not proof that the cable is counterfeit or electrically defective. Ask for the exact construction record before treating the offer as compliant.
Offer B provides a traceable datasheet declaring bare copper strands, with the requested size and suitable-looking electrical data. It is a declared deviation from this fictional RFQ's tinned-strand requirement. Do not silently approve it because other rows appear favorable. The buyer may request an alternative proposal or have the material requirement formally reconsidered.
Offer C identifies tinned copper strands and provides a resistance report, but the report refers to a different cable lot. The material description is more complete, yet the supplied-lot evidence remains unresolved. Request the linkage or the required report for the offered lot.
These replies need different actions: clarification for A, a controlled material deviation for B, and traceability closure for C. None should receive an overall pass just because it has the most detailed brochure.
If C later supplies an accepted matching record, close only the relevant evidence row. The assembly still needs the agreed termination, environmental and dimensional acceptance before production release.
Preserve the approved conductor and termination combination
A supplier's change from bare to tinned strands, or from one strand construction to another, should be evaluated against the approved cable-and-terminal combination. A shared nominal cross-section is not complete interchangeability evidence.

Keep reel identity, assembly batch, drawing revision and any accepted deviation connected in the release record. Agree how changes to material, finish, cable source or termination will be reported. A previous sample approval should not silently cover an undocumented substitution.
When preparing a quote comparison, separate the cable material line from lugs, protective components, assembly work and requested documentation. Ask suppliers to identify the commercial impact of the proposed configuration rather than assuming a fixed premium for tinning.
Buyer FAQ
Is every silver-colored cable conductor tinned copper?
Color alone is insufficient evidence. Ask for the exact conductor substrate and coating declaration tied to the offered part number. A photograph is useful for identification context, but cannot replace material documentation.
Does tinned copper automatically mean lower resistance?
Do not infer a resistance ranking from the finish. Compare the exact construction and the specified electrical values under matching units and reference conditions. Keep nominal values separate from acceptance limits and measured results.
Can a tinned terminal satisfy a requirement for tinned cable strands?
No. They describe different components. The RFQ should separately identify the cable strands, terminal material/finish and accepted termination arrangement.
What affects the quotation and document lead time?
Request separate confirmation for the chosen cable, termination components, sample scope, lot records and any additional evaluation. The supplier should state availability of the required evidence and the commercial terms for that configuration; no universal MOQ or lead time follows from the finish.
