A quotation for “M8 stainless solar bolts” does not establish that the offered bolt, nut and mounting assembly match your drawing. Before purchasing, separate three decisions: thread and dimensional compatibility, material and mechanical-property evidence, and the approved assembly process. Passing one does not close the others.
This guide helps buyers compare mounting fastener replies and record what must be resolved before release. The examples below are document-review exercises, not installation settings or verified project results.
Start with the complete joint identity
Give each mounting connection a drawing reference and revision. Identify the bracket or clamp, rail, bolt, nut or threaded insert, washers and any other contact parts. For a proprietary rail nut or T-bolt, request the actual mating profile and orientation drawing; a matching nominal thread does not establish rail compatibility.
Record which document controls each requirement. Module instructions, mounting-system instructions and the responsible designer's specification may address different interfaces. Resolve conflicts with the relevant document owners before accepting a supplier's alternative. A catalogue description should not silently replace an approved assembly drawing.
Use three separate approval fields in the purchasing worksheet:
- Geometry: offered part numbers and drawing dimensions match the required interfaces.
- Material and properties: evidence covers the specified grade, property class and delivered lot.
- Assembly: the proposed hardware and surface condition are covered by the applicable tightening instructions.
Name the reviewer and supporting document for each field. An empty field means an open item, even if the supplier has quoted a complete kit.
Compare the pitch on both mating parts
Thread pitch is the axial spacing between adjacent thread forms. Repeat the required pitch in the bolt and nut rows of the RFQ, especially when a project uses both coarse and fine threads. Include the thread designation, tolerance requirement, length and relevant drawing standard.

These examples show why equal nominal diameters do not make different pitches interchangeable. They do not select a thread, tolerance or engagement length for your installation. Obtain those requirements from the controlled joint design.
Ask the drawing to identify usable threaded length, the assembled stack and any blind-hole limit. Confirm how the inspection plan checks the specified dimensions. A photograph of a bolt next to a nut cannot close these fields, and forcing a mismatched pair together is not a compatibility check.
Keep stainless grade and property class separate
Bossard's January 2025 stainless-fastener guide distinguishes the steel-grade designation from the property class. Thus, A4-70 contains two different kinds of information; “70” is not a tightening-torque instruction. The guide also identifies labels such as 070 for screws with reduced load-bearing capacity arising from their head or shaft design. The purchasing consequence is to request the exact fastener specification and its applicable product form. “Stainless,” “marine grade” or an alloy shorthand is insufficient when the drawing requires a defined grade and property class. Likewise, a higher proposed property class remains a substitution for review, not automatic approval of the joint.
Ask the supplier to connect markings, manufacturer identity, packaging lot and the agreed inspection documents. Confirm which supplied components each record covers. Evidence for the bolt does not automatically identify the nut, washer or rail insert.

Ask how galling is controlled during assembly
Galling is adhesive wear between contacting surfaces. In threaded hardware, it can damage or seize the mating threads during tightening. BUMAX's guidance identifies material selection, thread quality, lubrication, damaged or dirty threads and installation conditions as relevant factors. It also warns that a galled fastener may fail to develop the required preload. BUMAX, Overcoming Galling, pages 2–5.
Translate that guidance into questions about the offered assembly: what surface condition is supplied, what handling is required, what tools and tightening method are permitted, and what evidence supports that process? Ask how damaged threads or abnormal tightening resistance are identified and handled.
A seized joint is not evidence that the intended clamp force has been achieved. Do not resolve an abnormal assembly by adding an arbitrary amount of torque. Require the responsible technical reviewer to determine disposition under the applicable instructions, including any replacement or inspection requirements.
Keep surface condition attached to tightening instructions
BUMAX's discussion of friction and preload explains that surface roughness, contamination and lubrication affect the relationship between applied torque and bolt tension. Record the proposed as-supplied finish and any specified factory treatment. If a bidder proposes a lubricant, coating, cleaning step or different nut, ask whether the approved assembly instructions cover that change. Where they do not, require a documented technical disposition before acceptance.
This guide intentionally supplies no universal torque value, lubricant recipe or percentage correction. Ask the assembly owner to specify the permitted combination and method, then make the quotation and delivered hardware traceable to that decision.
Hypothetical comparison: distinguish a mismatch from a missing record
Assume an invented drawing J-12, revision C requires an M8 × 1.25 bolt and matching nut, with a specified A4-70 bolt. Its assembly process is separately controlled, and its purchasing specification requires material records linked to the delivered lot. These details illustrate a review method; they are not a solar-mounting specification.

Do not summarize these findings as “both offers are stainless, so either is acceptable.” Send each bidder the exact open item, the required response and the reviewer responsible for closure. If the buyer changes the requirement, revise the drawing and obtain the necessary approvals instead of hiding the change in an email.
After clarification, retain a short closure record: original discrepancy, revised document, affected part numbers, reviewer and accepted scope. A document match is still only one part of joint approval; any required engineering evaluation or sample inspection must also be completed.
Agree the receipt and quotation scope
Before ordering, specify how incoming parts will be matched to the approved drawing and lot records. Separate mixed thread pitches or treatments in packaging and stock identification. Preserve traceability when kits are split for production or installation.
Require notification of changes to the manufacturer, fastener designation, geometry or surface condition before substitution. Ask the quotation to separate hardware, sample quantities, requested records and any proposed qualification work. Availability, price and delivery commitments must come from the supplier's actual response.

Can an M8 bolt be paired with any M8 nut?
No. Confirm matching pitch, the required tolerance and the specified product forms. The assembled geometry and engineering requirements remain separate checks.
Does A4-80 automatically replace an A4-70 bolt?
Treat it as a proposed substitution. Review the full specification and assembly instructions; the different property class alone does not authorize the change.
Should every stainless mounting bolt receive anti-seize?
Use only the surface condition and treatment covered by the applicable assembly instructions. If a treatment is proposed, resolve its effect on the approved tightening process before acceptance.
What records should accompany a fastener sample?
