PV Connector Current Ratings and Temperature Derating: An RFQ Guide

Compare PV connector current ratings by cable size, ambient temperature and installation conditions. Build a supplier evidence matrix before approving an RFQ.

A quotation showing a higher ampere rating does not necessarily offer more usable capacity in your installation. The number may apply to a different cable size, ambient temperature, connector configuration or approval basis. Comparing headline ratings can therefore produce a misleading supplier shortlist.

Compare the documented current capability at the project's required conditions. Ask every bidder to identify the exact connector pair, cable and applicable rating evidence. This guide provides a comparison sheet and an accept-or-hold method for that procurement decision; project electrical design remains a separate engineering responsibility.

What the current rating needs to describe

Treat a rating as a conditional statement: this identified configuration supports this current within these documented limits. A family name and a catalogue number in amperes are insufficient when the supporting conditions are missing.

For example, Stäubli's MA298 instructions list IEC current ratings against conductor cross-section and give a separate UL rating table. Its technical-data page also distinguishes ambient temperature from the upper limiting temperature. These are separate fields to record, not interchangeable permissions. Use these terms consistently in the RFQ:

  • Required design current: the value the project engineer specifies for this connection, including the applicable design basis. A buyer should not calculate it from a connector advertisement.
  • Local ambient temperature: the surrounding condition at the connection, with its assessment method identified. A regional weather forecast alone does not establish it.
  • Upper limiting temperature: a component temperature limit defined by the manufacturer. It is not another name for permissible ambient temperature.
  • Derating information: the manufacturer's relationship between permitted current and the relevant conditions, provided as a curve, table or application statement.

As an engineering distinction, current produces heating within a connection. A permitted surrounding temperature and a component temperature limit cannot be combined into an assumed current allowance without the manufacturer's applicable data.

Read the detailed table before ranking quotations

Phoenix Contact's page for SUNCLIX PV-C1M-C-HSG, item 1050770, illustrates why detail matters. Its electrical table specifies 40 A for 6 mm² and 34 A for 4 mm² under the listed IEC basis. The operating-temperature entry explicitly depends on a derating curve. Neither entry establishes the permitted current at every temperature in that range. Do not turn these manufacturer examples into a cross-brand comparison or apply their values to another offered item. If a summary, detailed table and quotation appear inconsistent, request a written clarification tied to the exact item and cable. Preserve that response with the approved bill of materials.

For a complete lead, review the assembly boundary as well. Stäubli's MA294 instructions for the identified UL-certified PV cable leads present current data by conductor size and maximum ambient temperature, and identify the lowest-rated component as the constraint on the lead's overall rating. The following is a proposed purchasing worksheet. Complete the project column first; require a document reference in each supplier response instead of a general assurance.

Ask the supplier to mark an unanswered cell as not yet demonstrated. This keeps a low price from being mistaken for a technically comparable offer.

Separate missing information from an explicit prohibition. For the leads in its scope, MA294 prohibits arrangements that restrict airflow, including large bundles, split looms or other housings. Record such an arrangement as excluded under those instructions, rather than treating a lower operating current as automatic permission. Review physical conditions without inventing a universal correction factor. Stäubli's MA294 installation notes, for example, call for minimizing direct sunlight exposure. Send the proposed location drawing and ask whether its published rating evidence applies. Do not assume a roof-mounted connector and a ventilated reference arrangement have identical conditions. Check whether a derating curve answers your question

Keep the original graph or table with its caption and footnotes. Record the document revision, connector variants, cable details, axis definitions and arrangement covered. Ask the manufacturer how to assess a project point that lies between published points or outside the shown conditions. Do not extrapolate from an unrelated curve.

A useful supplier reply identifies the applicable row or point and explains why it covers the proposed connection. “The connector operates up to the stated maximum temperature” leaves the allowable current unresolved. Likewise, a chart for a larger conductor does not substantiate the offered smaller cable.

If additional thermal evidence is necessary, agree on its scope before ordering samples: configuration identity, arrangement, ambient condition, current, duration or stabilization criterion, temperature measurement locations and acceptance limits. These belong in a manufacturer or qualified laboratory evaluation plan, rather than an informal buyer test on an energized PV circuit.

Hypothetical example: accept the evidence, or hold the offer

The following figures and supplier replies are invented solely to demonstrate document review. They are not ratings for real products or a system design recommendation.

Assume the project engineer has specified a 28 A requirement at 70 °C local ambient with a particular 6 mm² cable. The project also has separate voltage, mating, protection and installation requirements.

Offer B supplies the relevant evidence despite the smaller headline number. Its acceptance here is limited to the stated current-rating question. It does not waive design margins, approval requirements or any other release condition. A and C can return to review after supplying applicable evidence or revising their offers.

Make the accepted conditions part of the purchase record

Attach the completed worksheet, source documents and resolved questions to the approved quotation. Record who accepted each condition and whether a concession has an expiry or a restricted scope. A change to the connector part, cable construction or installation arrangement should trigger a review of the affected evidence.

Does a higher advertised ampere rating mean a better connector?

Only a comparison under matching conditions can answer the capacity question. Require the exact cable, ambient condition, arrangement and rating basis before comparing offers. Price and headline amperes alone cannot establish suitability.

Can the full rated current be used at the maximum ambient temperature?

Do not assume so. Ask for the manufacturer's applicable derating information at the project condition. The ambient range and current-rating entry must be interpreted together with their conditions and footnotes.

Can a larger cable solve a connector rating shortfall?

A larger cable creates a different proposed configuration. Review connector cable acceptance, the complete lead and its relevant rating evidence again. Increasing conductor size does not automatically authorize a new current rating or an unsupported termination.

What should be sent before requesting price and lead time?

Send both connector identities, the specified cable, required current and voltage, temperature and installation conditions, destination requirements, drawing revision and order quantity. Request a quotation that links its technical response and any exceptions to those inputs.
