“Blue CEE camping inlet, waterproof, with adapter” leaves several purchasing decisions unresolved. A buyer still needs the actual supply and vehicle mating faces, current rating, contact arrangement, protective-earth clock position, enclosure state and cable assembly. The word shore here means a caravan or campsite AC hookup, not a marine ship-to-shore system.
This guide turns those decisions into a controlled RFQ. It does not select a campsite installation design or authorize changing an existing vehicle inlet. Have the responsible electrical designer or installer confirm the supply arrangement and destination-market rules.
Name both ends before choosing an adapter
Start with a drawing of the complete path: campsite outlet, portable cable or adapter, vehicle-mounted inlet and the internal termination boundary. For each mating interface, request a front view of the live mating face, a rear or terminal view, part number and revision. Label line, neutral and protective earth on the actual view. A rear view can appear mirrored, so an unlabeled photograph is weak pin-allocation evidence.
“Three pin” alone is insufficient. Freeze the pole count, rated voltage and frequency, rated current, clock position, plug/socket/inlet role and the matching part on the other side. MENNEKES explains that the clock position locates the protective-earth contact on the live end. Its angled plug 1411 product record gives a camping example: 16 A, 3 poles, 230 V, 50–60 Hz, 6 h and IP44. Those values describe that specific part; they are not a substitute for the destination connection schedule.
The IEC 60309-1:2021 publication record covers general requirements for industrial plugs, socket-outlets and appliance inlets. IEC 60309-2:2021 covers dimensional compatibility for pin and contact-tube accessories and is read with Part 1. On the September 17, 2026 source check, the IEC Part 2 page showed a corrected August 2026 version incorporating Corrigendum 1. State the edition and any adopted national version in the RFQ, then have the supplier identify the exact part and evidence. A standard title alone does not prove that an unspecified adapter mates or is approved for a market.
Keep 16 A and 32 A configurations distinct
A buyer may encounter superficially similar blue, 230 V, 6 h, three-pole parts at different current ratings. MENNEKES lists its wall-mounted inlet 844 as 16 A and its wall-mounted inlet 802 as 32 A; both pages show 3 poles, 230 V, 6 h and IP44. They are product examples, not interchangeable purchase options. Ask for the physical mating drawings and the actual product codes rather than inferring fit from color or clock marking alone.
If an adapter changes from a 32 A supply-side interface to a 16 A downstream interface, the downstream rating cannot be treated as 32 A. Document the intended protective device, permissible load and installation arrangement for that exact market and campsite supply. Do not quote a generic “32 A to 16 A” lead without a scheme showing what protects the smaller side and who approves it. The component current marking does not by itself establish the allowed circuit current.
Specify IP protection by operating state
Ask which part of the assembly is IP rated and under which condition: inlet mated with its connector, socket or connector unmated with lid closed, and any free plug left exposed. Record the associated cover, gasket, cable gland and mating-part identity. An IP44 label on an inlet does not automatically rate an open plug face, an unrelated mating pair or a hole cut into a vehicle body.
MENNEKES distinguishes these states in its IP protection guidance: receptacles and connectors must meet their protection type connected and disconnected; plugs and inlets meet it when connected to the counterpart. Its 844 datasheet lists IP44 and explicitly says the part has no protection cap. For an exposed vehicle inlet, the RFQ should therefore identify the chosen lid or other closure and obtain evidence for the installed, unmated storage condition rather than assuming the bare 844 has it.
Vehicle cutout and mounting details belong beside IP evidence. Request the flange and cutout drawing, orientation, gasket or seal specification, fastener pattern, cable entry and installation instructions. Define inspection of lid closing, seal seating, drain path and cable exit for the proposed mounting orientation. Treat the lead and terminations as an assembly
For a portable adapter, specify each end by exact manufacturer and part number, the cable type, conductor count and cross-section, jacket suitability, finished length and length datum. Include the plug or connector's accepted cable diameter and conductor range. Ask how the cable is clamped and sealed, how conductor preparation is controlled, and how protective-earth continuity and line/neutral allocation are checked after assembly.
The MENNEKES 1411 product page identifies a specific 16 A, three-pole plug with screw terminals. Its catalog identity is a starting point for the assembly drawing, not evidence that an arbitrary cable fits. For the selected plug, require the manufacturer's installation sheet, permitted conductor and cable ranges, and instructions for sealing, bend protection and strain relief. Conductor strand construction and end treatment must match those instructions.
Do not let “heavy-duty rubber cable” replace the cable marking, conductor size, temperature and outdoor-use evidence required for the order. Define whether length includes connector bodies or only exposed cable, and state tolerance. Ask the assembler for a first-article drawing and test record covering pin allocation, protective-earth continuity, insulation, strain-relief retention and visual sealing. Test methods and limits should come from the applicable product and market requirements, not an invented universal value.

Obtain the supplier's controlled drawing, bill of materials and change notice rules. A substitute inlet, adapter end, cable, gasket or gland can change fit, sealing or approvals even when the visible color remains the same.
Make market evidence order specific
Name the destination country or countries, caravan model or installation class, campsite supply expectation and responsible installer or certification route. Ask the bidder to map the selected inlet, adapter and cable assembly to the adopted national standard, local marking and conformity documents applicable there. Require certificate or declaration numbers, issuing body where relevant, exact model coverage, edition and validity. Keep product approval, cable evidence and installed-vehicle acceptance distinct.
MENNEKES's 844 datasheet lists DIN EN IEC 60309-2, CE declaration and VDE/EAC labels for that part. That is useful model-specific evidence; it does not establish a blanket approval for a custom adapter or for every sales market. Before release, reconcile the evidence schedule with the buyer's actual site and installation specification.

Is every blue 6 h CEE caravan part interchangeable?
No. The MENNEKES examples include both 16 A and 32 A three-pole, 230 V, 6 h parts. Confirm the exact mating faces, current rating and product codes before approving a connection.
Does IP44 apply to an unplugged vehicle inlet?
Ask for evidence for the actual exposed state and closure. MENNEKES says inlets meet their protection type when connected to a counterpart, and its 844 datasheet lists no protection cap. Do not transfer a mated rating to an uncovered, unmated installation.
Can a 32 A to 16 A adapter be bought from connector ratings alone?
No. Specify the supply, downstream load and protection arrangement for the destination market, then get the responsible designer or installer to approve the assembly. A 32 A interface does not raise a 16 A downstream component's rating.
Does an IEC 60309 reference prove local market approval?
No. Request the adopted national edition, exact covered product model, required declarations or certificates and the finished assembly's installation evidence for the destination market.
