A correctly wired harness can become difficult to service when its labels detach, its printing fades or its serial number retrieves the wrong record. Specify the identification system before comparing quotes: what it says, what carries the text, how it is printed and attached, and what evidence supports its intended environment.

Separate the legend from the label specification
The legend is the visible information printed on a marker. Define its exact characters, capitalization, separators and leading zeros in a controlled file. Specify whether wire IDs repeat at both ends, where the assembly identifier appears, and which information belongs only on packaging.
Then define the physical requirements separately. A note saying “permanent wire labels” leaves the supplier to choose the carrier, printing method, placement and durability evidence. Request a sample layout at its intended size, including the longest expected legend. Approve changes to character size or line breaks before they reach production.
Wire ID, assembly part number, revision, serial number and production lot serve different purposes. State which fields must appear on the harness and which records they must retrieve. Do not require every field on each small wire marker if a separate assembly label provides the agreed traceability.
Choose a carrier that fits the assembly sequence
Compare the finished identification arrangement, including its attachment. These checks help narrow the options; they do not qualify a material for a particular environment.

HellermannTyton describes its TAG40-30TD1, article 596-97006, as a polyester self-laminating label with a protective layer against humidity and mechanical abrasion. Its application instructions require bonded surfaces to be clean, dry and free of dust and grease. This makes the actual cable surface and application process part of the review. Panduit's MP100/MP300 brochure describes continuous heat-shrink labels supplied in cassettes containing both media and ribbon. Its heat-shrink section lists specific cable diameter ranges. Select the exact sleeve for the actual insulated cable diameter and establish how it will be fitted; conductor cross-section alone does not describe the outside surface. For an already terminated assembly, TE describes HTCM-SCE-TP markers attached with cable ties and suitable for identification after connector installation. A tie-on option still needs a suitable location and fastening specification. TE HTCM-SCE-TP overview.
Treat the media and printing process as one controlled combination
Specify the marker part number and the printing consumable together. TE lists TMS-RJS-RIBBON-4HT for its HTCM-SCE-TP system; the HellermannTyton product above recommends TT822OUT. These product-specific recommendations do not establish interchangeability between ribbons or label materials.
Ask the supplier to identify the printer, ribbon or integrated cassette, artwork revision and applicable print settings or work instruction. Where a durability report is offered, check that its tested combination matches the quoted combination. “Same color” or “same printer family” does not close a difference in media or ribbon.
Approve a specimen made with the intended production process. Keep its identification tied to that process record, so a later change of consumable can be evaluated. A clear photograph demonstrates appearance at one moment; it cannot establish resistance to cleaning, rubbing or heat.
Translate the environment into an evidence request
List the exposures the marker will actually experience: operating temperature, sunlight where applicable, handling abrasion, cable movement and named cleaning agents or process fluids. Separate storage, application and service conditions. A service temperature statement alone does not authorize applying an adhesive label at that temperature.
The HellermannTyton page lists resistance to 94% alcohol for 720 hours at room temperature, alongside other named exposures. Those conditions matter: they are not proof of resistance to every cleaner, combined heat and fluid exposure, or a stated number of outdoor service years. Request evidence stating the tested marker and print combination, substrate, preparation, fluid identity and concentration, temperature, duration, exposure method and acceptance criteria. Distinguish testing of the label material from evaluation of the finished printed and attached marker. Ask what was inspected: readable characters, barcode performance, adhesion, cracking or another defined condition.
Have the responsible project team agree any additional test method, sample quantity and pass criteria. Avoid inventing a universal rubbing cycle count or converting a short laboratory exposure into an unsupported lifetime claim. Check readability in the final harness position
Mark label locations on the assembly drawing using recognizable features. Confirm that boots, sleeves, clamps and mating equipment do not conceal required information. State the intended viewing direction and any position limits needed for inspection or service.
Review the longest legend on the smallest applicable wire or bundle, and include the final protective layers. For a barcode, specify the required symbology and data string. Decode the sample and compare its actual contents with the approved data; a scanner beep alone does not establish correct identity.
If the project requires formal barcode quality verification, define the applicable method and acceptance grade separately from a simple decoding check. Human-readable text should remain available wherever the project requires identification without a scanner.
Keep traceability useful after delivery
A wire marker such as W001 may identify one circuit within a design without identifying a unique manufactured assembly. Define the assembly-level key that links to the required lot, drawing revision and inspection records. Agree who maintains those records and how the buyer will retrieve them.
Test that link with an actual sample identifier before approving the format. If the lookup needs several fields, provide them explicitly rather than assuming a serial number is globally unique. Retention and access arrangements belong in the purchase requirements.
Control reprints and replacement labels. Record the reason, authorization and affected assembly, preserve the historical record, and prevent obsolete labels from presenting a conflicting current identity. Broader production-change evidence belongs in the first-article and change-control guide.
Worked review: three different failures behind a readable label
Consider a fictional RFQ for harness H-039, revision C. It requires wire legend W001, an assembly barcode containing exactly H039-C-000417, and a label position visible after the specified sleeve is installed. These are invented project requirements, not industry numbering rules or SINAWATTS test results.

Keep these dispositions separate. Fixing the barcode does not resolve the ribbon evidence, and moving the label does not validate its environmental performance. Compare suppliers on the specific gaps they close, including any additional sample or evaluation cost.
Send a quotation package that can be answered clearly
Provide the drawing revision, legend file, required data format, cable diameters and surfaces, marker locations, assembly sequence, exposure profile, quantity and requested records. Ask suppliers to name proposed marker and print parts and list deviations explicitly.
Separate recurring label cost from artwork setup, variable-data handling, samples and any additional evaluation. This supports comparable quotations without assuming that a low unit price includes traceability records or project-specific testing.

Does a clear laminate make a wire label chemical-proof?
No. Review evidence for the exact label, printing combination and named exposure conditions. A protective layer does not establish resistance to every chemical, temperature or cleaning method.
Can markers be added after the connectors are installed?
Some designs permit this, including suitable tie-on or wraparound products. Confirm the exact product, installation access and final placement; do not assume a closed sleeve can pass over an existing connector.
Is a successful barcode scan enough for traceability?
No. Compare the decoded data with the approved string and confirm that it retrieves the correct assembly records. Formal barcode quality verification, if required, is a separate acceptance requirement.
What information most affects quotation cost and lead time?
Marker parts, print combinations, variable data, artwork, quantity and required evaluation all affect the quotation. Supply those details and ask the supplier to separate setup, samples and testing from recurring production costs.
