Battery Switch Cranking Duty: Repeated Starts, Rest Time and Switching Evidence

Compare battery switch cranking claims using start duration, rest time, cable conditions and separate switching evidence. Build a duty-specific supplier RFQ.

A large cranking-current number does not, by itself, show that a battery switch supports repeated engine starts. A useful quotation must connect the current to its duration, repetition, rest interval and installation conditions. It must also distinguish current carried through closed contacts from current interrupted while operating the switch.

For an OEM buyer, the decision is whether the supplier's evidence covers the project's complete starting duty. The following method turns an undefined “high-current switch” request into a traceable comparison. Separate a current claim into four records

Create separate RFQ fields for continuous carrying, time-limited carrying, starting duty and contact operation. Do not put them in a single “maximum amps” column.

As a named example, the Blue Sea Systems 6006 product page lists 300 A continuous, 500 A for five minutes and 900 A starting for 30 seconds. It separately lists a 25 A switching rating and specifies cable size for the published ratings. Those are different entries for that product, not a conversion rule between rating types. The product example illustrates how to read a specification. It does not establish ratings for a similarly shaped switch, a SINAWATTS catalogue item or an alternative installation. Do not use the separate switching figure as blanket operating permission: the applicable voltage, load type and instructions still control the decision.

Describe the complete starting sequence

Ask the responsible system designer for a current-versus-time requirement, with its source and revision. Distinguish a measured waveform from a starter manufacturer's requirement or an engineering estimate. If the information is incomplete, identify the missing section rather than drawing a convenient rectangular pulse.

Capture the initial inrush, subsequent cranking period, number of allowed attempts, rest between attempts and the starting temperature. Add any background load that also passes through the switch. State whether the assembly begins the sequence after sustained normal operation or from a defined cooled condition.

Blue Sea's historical 2002 starting-standard article describes a repeating sequence containing an inrush period, a cranking period and a rest interval. Its value here is the explicit separation of those phases. The procurement takeaway is to ask for sequence coverage. A single duration on a datasheet cannot silently supply the missing repetition and recovery conditions.

Use a duty-to-evidence table

Complete the first column from the project specification, then require the bidder to fill the second with document references and the exact offered part number. The purchasing reviewer records the disposition in the third.

Why equal total seconds do not prove equal duty

Consider a hypothetical document review, not a tested installation. A project calls for three 10-second starting attempts, each including its initial inrush, with two intervening five-second rests. The requested timeline is:

  • Attempt 1: seconds 0–10; rest: seconds 10–15.
  • Attempt 2: seconds 15–25; rest: seconds 25–30.
  • Attempt 3: seconds 30–40; any permitted later restart requires its own defined recovery condition.

Supplier A quotes “900 A for 30 seconds” but gives no repeated-start conditions. Supplier B provides a report that explicitly covers the proposed three-attempt sequence, the stated current profile and the relevant installation conditions.

The project has 30 seconds of cranking over a 40-second sequence. That arithmetic is useful for checking that the schedule is complete. It does not prove that Supplier A's single-event rating covers it. The initial state, inrush phases, heat transfer and recovery assumptions have not been reconciled.

Keep A on hold for clarification. Send B's evidence for the responsible engineer's acceptance; a matching description alone does not prove a report is valid or the switch is suitable. Review the actual results, limits, model identification and any exclusions before release.

Do not manufacture equivalence by multiplying current by seconds or by applying a home-made percentage reduction. A supplier can propose a justified engineering assessment, but it should name its assumptions, supporting evidence and permitted scope. Save that assessment with the approved drawing and bill of materials.

Cable conditions belong with the rating

The installation sheet linked from the 6006 page explicitly connects its ratings to the specified cable arrangement and states that smaller cables reduce current ratings. It also instructs users to shut appliances down before selecting OFF and prohibits selecting OFF while the engine runs. For the offered switch, ask the bidder to identify every difference between the documented setup and the proposed assembly. Useful differences include cable construction, conductor size, terminal hardware, connection geometry, enclosure and mounting. Have the relevant technical owner decide whether existing evidence remains applicable or further validation is required.

Record the decision against an exact arrangement. An approval for one cable-and-switch assembly should not become unrestricted permission to substitute smaller cables or a different terminal stack. The rear-terminal clearance guide addresses the separate physical-fit review.

Resolve documentation gaps before comparing prices

Give each bidder the same duty sheet and request a deviation list with a named contact for technical replies. Separate existing evidence from proposed additional validation, including who will perform it, what it will establish and what remains outside its scope.

Request separate quotation lines for evaluation samples, the approved cable-and-switch configuration, documentation, any additional validation and production quantities. Ask when each required document will become available and whether a later change to the duty sheet changes the quotation. No universal MOQ, price or lead time follows from a current rating.

Use three explicit review states: supported, excluded and unresolved. A missing report is unresolved, not evidence of failure. An express manufacturer prohibition is excluded. Prepare the battery-switch duty RFQ

Attach the current-time requirement, starting sequence, maximum DC voltage, operating instructions required by the project, cable arrangement and environment. Identify sample, pilot and production quantities and the required traceability. Ask the supplier to return an exact model, documentation revision, deviations and scope of any additional work.

Can a 30-second cranking rating cover three 10-second starts?

Not on duration alone. Request coverage of the actual current profile, repeated inrush events, rest intervals, initial condition and installation. Equal accumulated cranking time does not establish equivalent electrical and thermal duty.

Does the cranking rating permit switching the starter current on and off?

Do not infer that permission. Carrying current through closed contacts and operating contacts under load require separate evidence. Follow the exact manufacturer's instructions and have the system designer define the operating sequence.

Can we keep the switch but change the cable size after sample approval?

Treat the cable change as a controlled deviation. Compare it with the conditions supporting the rating and obtain a documented technical disposition before release. A physically compatible cable is not automatically equivalent to the validated arrangement.

What should a quote include when repeated-start evidence is missing?

Ask for a clear gap statement, the proposed evidence or validation scope, responsibility, cost and timing. Keep sample approval and production release separate. Do not accept an unqualified capability claim as a substitute for the missing conditions.
