UL 94 V-0 Plastic: Thickness, Color and Component Evidence for an RFQ

Check UL 94 V-0 material claims against resin identity, thickness, color and component evidence. Build a clear RFQ for electrical housings and covers.

A supplier quotes an electrical cover as “V-0 plastic,” but the attached record identifies a different resin grade or color. Another offer names the correct grade yet omits the minimum wall dimension. Comparing these quotations by price first can leave the main acceptance question unanswered.

Treat the flame rating as one part of a documented material-and-part requirement. For a fuse-box cover, connector housing or other molded electrical component, ask which material record supports the claim and how the proposed part relates to its conditions. A V-0 label alone does not establish that a complete component is fireproof or suitable for your application.

What a UL 94 flame classification tells a buyer

UL Solutions explains that UL 94 classifications describe material behavior in controlled, small-scale flame tests. HB uses a horizontal test, while V classifications use vertical specimens and criteria involving extinguishing behavior and flaming drips. The methods differ: UL specifically states that VTM-0 cannot be treated as equivalent to V-0. These are test classifications, not a promise that an assembled device cannot burn. In an RFQ, write the required designation exactly. Do not allow a supplier to shorten VTM-0 to V-0, replace a stated requirement with “flame retardant,” or leave the material unidentified. If an alternative is proposed, request a separate deviation entry for the responsible engineer to assess before comparison with compliant offers.

Also separate your questions. “Which flammability evidence supports this material?” and “What evidence covers the complete component in its intended use?” require different answers. Record both decisions; do not mark the second complete merely because a document was supplied for the first. Connect the material record to the proposed part

The UL Yellow Card introduction describes a digital record of properties for a recognized polymeric material, with certified materials appearing in UL's Product iQ and Prospector databases. This makes the record a useful starting point for checking identity and stated conditions. It does not identify which material was actually used in an unnamed shipment.

Ask the supplier to provide a readable record reference alongside the resin maker, full grade designation, proposed part number and drawing revision. Keep the original document or dated database reference, rather than a cropped V-0 logo without its surrounding information. Have the qualified reviewer confirm that the record is current and relevant to the proposed configuration.

A buyer can organize the evidence without claiming certification expertise. Give every open question an owner and a due date. If the resin identity is missing, return the proposal for clarification. If the record is complete but its application to the part is uncertain, route it to the engineering or conformity-assessment reviewer. Those are different gaps and should not share a generic “certificate pending” status.

Read thickness and color as conditions, not decorations

UL's recognition abbreviation guide defines “Min Thk. mm” as minimum thickness in millimeters and lists separate fields for flame class, RTI (relative temperature index) and CTI (comparative tracking index). Its color key distinguishes BK, black; NC, natural without pigmentation; and ALL, any color. Read the relevant entries together rather than moving a rating from one row or property field to another.

For purchasing review, request a drawing that identifies the part regions relevant to the requirement, their minimum permitted dimensions and how those dimensions will be checked. Ask the supplier to explain any difference between the quoted color or formulation and the material record. The responsible reviewer should decide whether the documented coverage is adequate; a purchasing spreadsheet is not a substitute for that determination.

Do not silently treat a nominal drawing value as the guaranteed minimum. Tolerances matter to a dimensional comparison. Likewise, distinguish “the supplier proposes black” from “the evidence covers the proposed black material.” Keeping these statements separate makes unresolved assumptions visible before tooling, samples or a production order are authorized.

A practical RFQ evidence matrix

The following is a buyer's document-control method, not a UL test procedure. Fill it for each offered part and keep deviations explicit.

Attach the same matrix to each supplier inquiry. Ask for “not supplied” or a specific exception where information is absent. A blank cell should stay open; it should not become a presumed pass when a quotation is summarized for management.

Worked example: a nominal dimension conceals a gap

Consider a fictional RFQ for cover C-R3. For this exercise only, assume the buyer's reviewer has specified a material-evidence minimum of 1.50 mm for the relevant region. This is an invented purchasing comparison, not a UL record or a SINAWATTS product specification.

Offer A gives a drawing dimension of 1.50 ± 0.15 mm. Its permitted minimum is 1.35 mm: 1.50 minus 0.15. Comparing only the nominal 1.50 would miss a 0.15 mm gap against the example requirement. Put A on hold until the supplier and reviewer resolve the drawing or evidence basis; do not average the discrepancy away.

Offer B gives 1.80 ± 0.10 mm for the same identified region, yielding a 1.70 mm minimum. B clears this example's dimensional comparison, but that is only one completed row. Its proposed resin identity, color coverage and complete-component requirements still need review. Neither offer becomes approved merely because its arithmetic is easy to check.

Record the resulting action in the quotation comparison: A needs a revised basis; B can proceed to the remaining evidence checks. This avoids requesting identical follow-ups from suppliers whose unresolved issues are different.

Keep sample approval and later changes connected

At sample review, compare the part identification and submitted documents with the proposal that was accepted. Agree which measurements and identity records will be retained, how an unexplained difference is handled, and who signs the release. For repeat orders, ask suppliers to identify proposed changes before treating them as equivalent. Useful review triggers include a different resin grade, color formulation, drawing revision or supply arrangement that affects the agreed evidence. The buyer's change procedure should define when new samples, document review or further evaluation are required. Do not invent a universal retest interval or accept “same V-0” as the entire substitution justification.

Request required component evidence by product identity and scope; avoid advertising a material record as certification of an entire product family.

Prepare the supplier inquiry

Send the component function, intended market, drawing revision, required designation, proposed colors, quantity and the evidence matrix. Identify the engineering contact who can resolve interpretation questions. Ask the quotation to list included documents, unresolved deviations and any sample or evaluation work that needs a separate agreement.

Does V-0 mean the complete housing is fireproof?

No. It describes a particular material flammability classification under specified test conditions. Request evidence for the intended component and its application separately, and avoid using “fireproof” as a substitute for a defined requirement.

Is the same polymer name enough to approve an alternative?

No. Ask for the maker, full grade, proposed configuration and applicable record. Have the responsible reviewer compare the alternative with the original requirement and document any accepted deviation before approving it.

Can a nominal wall dimension be used without its tolerance?

Not for a comparison that depends on the permitted minimum. Obtain the controlled drawing and identify the relevant region and tolerance. Refer unresolved coverage questions to the responsible technical reviewer rather than assuming that a matching nominal value closes them.

Should every quotation include new laboratory testing?

Not automatically. First identify the required evidence and what valid documentation already covers the proposal. Ask the responsible reviewer to define remaining evaluation needs, then request separate pricing and timing for that agreed scope without assuming the supplier can perform it.
